Visit from Paralympic athlete David Weir
David Weir, four times gold medallist from the 2012 London Paralymics, visited Guildford Grove Primary School today for a very special assembly. He was accompanied by his coach, Jenny Archer with whom he runs the Weir Archer Academy which trains the next generation of wheelchair athletes. Amongst this new breed of athletes is Graham Spencer who attended Guildford Grove Primary School from the age of 3 to 11 years. Together, David, Jenny and Graham spoke with the pupils at Guildford Grove and answered their questions.
Graham had always wanted to be an athlete but decided on wheelchair racing after his teacher secured him tickets to see David Weir live in action at the London 2012 Paralympics. Inspired by his performance, he then joined the Weir Archer Academy in October 2012 and since then has been competing on a national stage. His first success was at the age of 12 when he entered the Virgin Mini Marathon and came second in the under 15 category. Most recently he came third in the Westminster Mile competing against athletes under the age of 17 and gaining a personal best.
The Deputy Headteacher at Guildford Grove said, “The assembly was an incredibly special occasion. We have taught Graham since he was three years old and it was an honour to have him and David Weir, the person that has inspired him to train to be an athlete, in the same room. We all knew he had potential but it seems Jenny Archer knows exactly how to channel this in all the right ways. We are all really proud.”
